Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 50 of 2019

A busy week with several banner Manuscripts among the 63 that were digizited this week. Vat.lat.5750 is a 6th C Sacramentay thought to be from Bobbio, created as a palimpsest over a series of even older manuscripts. The Vatican provided a series of notes at the beginning of the digitized copy explaining the collation as well as multi-spectral images to aid in reading the under-text

Also added was Vat.lat.10959, a single 5th C leaf of St. Cyprian in a lovely Uncial hand. It is bound in a small volume along with the early-20th C article describing its content and discovery

In Vat.lat.6082 we have a late 12th C missal that, if not from Montecassino, represents practice there. It includes some music in the particularly Beneventan mode, with diastimatic neumes on a partial staff, a red line represents C, a yellow line F, and the singers calculate what lies between them. For an example see the temporarily appropriate Mass for the First Sunday in Advent, starting with the indroit Ad Te Levavi on f.7r to the right

The bottom bar is from the title page of a volume of Cicero's Orations, thought to be written by Bernardo Bembo, father of the famous humanist scribe, poet, cardinal, etc. Pietro Bembo
