It's not an adversarial system, more an inquisitorial procedure. However, given poor acoustics, elders who are hard-of-hearing, and to have private conversations out of earshot of the other party, I think they would stand on the same side at all times.

That's a very interesting idea. As I am watching a TV courtroom drama series right now, I would object that client and counsel are always together on the same side of the courtroom. But is that necessarily so? Maybe it works better if the client and counsel are face to face, making eye contact. So it's an aspect of canonical court procedure that we will have to hope for a legal expert to comment on.

Was wondering if the advocate pointing to the woman could actually have been the man's advocate. They are dressed in the same colours, as are the woman and the other advocate. Or would this merely have been a device to give both aesthetic dynamism and balance to the image, just as the colours of the clerical judges' clothing on either side of the pope are alternating rather than mirroring each other?

Thanks you so much for including our Twitter exchanges here on your blog. Sometimes fanciful thinking and laughter lead to a solid resolution. I think some people need to try it more often! It's been a stimulating brainstorming session, which I've enjoyed so much. I wonder if the Pontiff was being egotistical by inserting himself into an otherwise unremarkable legal dispute. How often did women prevail against their husbands, or any man, in court? Despite the ambiguity and mystery today, for which I am still scratching my head, maybe someone else will illuminate us all in the near future.
