London-Victoria and Albert-Closeup of the Veroli Casket 142

London-Victoria and Albert-Epistle of St Paul45

950-1000 The Byzantine capitol of Constantinople was a centre for the production of boxes of this type, made of ivory and bone. This one, which eventually found its way to the cathedral of Verloi in central Italy, is the finest surviving example. It is possibly a marriage casket, and the scenes represent pagan gods and goddesses. Byzantine Empire, Constantinole (216-1865)
