This iron clock is a rare survivor from the early 1500s. It probably started life as a small turret clock which drove a dial on the outside of a building. Later, it was converted for domestic use and the painted dial was added. Just beneath the bell is a swinging bar called the foliot, which controls the rate of the clock.
