Vatican City-Vatican..rance of St Peter14

From the Raphael Rooms St. Peter Delivered from Prison demonstrates the principle of the apostles and the first pope, miraculously freed from prison by an angel while the guards lay sleeping (Acts 12, 5-12). The scene refers to Julius II who, before being elected pope, was the titular Cardinal of St. Peter in Chains. As Raphael creates a celebration of light, he compares the divine light of the angel with that of the dawn, of the moon, and of the flares and their reflection on the armour, and even the natural light which comes through the window, creating an extraordinary effect

Tuscania, near val Vidone Campanari excavations 1834 250-200 BCE Adonis is shown lying on a heavily draped kline, naked except for his boots and a mantle which veils his head, and with the fatal wound showing on his left thigh. The young hero-divinity, who was being fought over by Aphrodite and Persephone, is dying from the wounds he has received from a wild boar whose appearance was, perhaps, the work of the jealous Ares.
