![]() Male Chiusi Canoptic [Louvre] (in reference to 4 similar pieces) [Louvre] This type of ossuary in terra-cotta, improperly called a "Canoptic" due to similarities with the Egyptian Canoptic jars for the vicera of mummies, is a design unique to the region of Chiusi in the 7th and 6th centuries. They were placed in a large vase, set into the ground. Inside the large vase it sat on a seat of terra-cotta that resembled the bronze thrones of the Villanova period. The cover was modeled in the form of a human head, and the later ones have articulated arms attached to humanize the body of the jar, where the ashes of the deceased were placed.
