Dyptich of the Muses

Gilded Saltceller

[Louvre] Two scenes from the Old Testament are illustrated here. The first shows the ascension of Elijah, who rides to heaven in a Quadriga, giving his cloak to his student Elisha. Using Pagan iconography, the river Jordan is reperesented as a helf-dressed man with a vase pouring out water. At the far right, coming out of the clouds, is the hand of G-d, giving the tablets of the Law to Moses who is on Mount Sinai, represented here as a small hill.
