Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 38 of 2020

Twenty-three manuscripts were added to the online repository this week. As with recent weeks the majority were the works of 18th C antiquary Pierluigi Galletti. In addition were several latin works and a fragment of South Italian Euchologium, Greek analogue to a Pontificale, that was probably in roll form, Vat.gr.2649. A pair of Greek palimpsests also made the list, including Vat.gr.2061.a, a 10th C copy of the sermons of Gregory Nazianzus over multiple other texts including an 8th C Lectionary. More unusual is Vat.iber.4, a double-palimpsest of Georgian over Syriac over Greek.

One of the sad things about working with digitized manuscripts from the Vatican is that they give you so much, but leave out the little details that would make it so much more useful. The photography of Vat.gr.2061.a is a fine example of that. There are visible-light photographs of every page (good), UV photos of every page (great), and in some cases one or even two more photographs per side(fantastic). There's just no technical information about these extra photos, are they alternate wavelengths, UV using a different technique, x-rays, etc? Although having the photos is wonderful and makes it possible to extract as much of the under-text as possible, just adding that tiny extra bit of information would make it so much more useful. To the right is a mosaic of four views of f.137v (the codex starts on f.137r), showing the different levels of the text

The bottom border is the introduction and dating clause from a charter from St. Biagio in Aversa in Vat.lat.12935, f.3r. Although the manuscript is a later copy, the charter dates to 1133 (11th Indiction)
