Only thirty-five manuscripts were digitized by the Vatican this week, which probably isn't due to Rosh Hashana. The manuscripts were pretty widely spread for a rather quiet week, with the sixteen from Vat.lat as the only fond with more than ten. Following that were the two popular ones of late Barb.lat with eight, and Ott.lat with three. Three parts of the large multi-volume Missal from the Bonc. fond also came online this week, bringing that to seven of what is, at least, a twelve volume work. A single volume each from Chig, Ross, S. Maria Maggiore, Vat.gr, and Vat.pres, completes the week

To the right is f.14v from Ross.204, an 11th C Missal. An interesting decorative technique seen in this, and other Carolingian/Ottonian manuscripts is the use of silver leaf in addition to the more common gold. The reason this did not persist is obvious on this page, where the D of the recto side has oxidized and bled through the parchment. The text here is part of the night lesson for Christmas Eve.

At the bottom is the final line of text from f.26v, the last page, of Vat.lat.11183. This is a 17th C book of poetry by Melchor de Fonseca y Almeida, a Spanish poet. It's a good reminder that the codes in the fond name, lat in this case, refer to the alphabet, not the language. Thus Vat.lat has, among others, English, Spanish, French, and Latin manuscripts which all use the Latin alphabet
