| Lead Pencil wows
crowd at the Roxy ROXBURY If you talk to anyone in the Franklin Park area of Mattapan, on Roxburys Leven Street or in Cambridges Dorsey Highlands, they will tell you that Lead Pencil is by far the most talented rapper to come out of Boston since the New Kids on the Block back in the mid 1980s. Which is why it was so stunning to the crowd at the Roxy last Saturday when Lead Pencil (backed by his band Enuff Erasin) stopped performing in the middle of his third song. "Hes such a smooth rapper. He always gots the words flowin, you know what Im sayin?" said Dale Evans, 23, of South Boston. "Lead Pencil is all about flowin and shit." According to one witness that evening, Enuff Erasin had just started their third song called "My Boat," from their new album I Love Roasting Aroma. "Yeah, they was up there, you know what Im sayin, yeah, and they was kickin the shit. Real phat shit. Lead Pencil was goin off. He just started doin "My Boat," which goes a little somethin like this: Hmmm, yeah Hmmm, yeah Dont challenge me "Yeah, and then he just stops. And the whole crowd, you know what Im sayin, thinks Lead Pencil is just playin or somethin. And then he got all weird and mentioned somethin about some European Community [EC] and then started rattlin off words and shit like preprudent, ramiform, vaunt-courier, squaw, stab, ogress, Malabar Coast, tobe, fuddling cup, breastplow and Sidney Joseph Perelman." "Lead Pencil is okay hes just going through a painful vocabulary growth process," said a spokesperson for K3 Records, Enuff Erasins label. "Every six years he is infused with 348 new words and phrases. His brain cant handle the overload of new information. As a result, he blurts the words out in a Tourettes-like fashion and then goes silent. Hell be back." |
