Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 32 of 2020

Eighty-three manuscripts were added to the repository this week. This includes another sixty-three volumes of the work of Pierluigi Galletti, spread across the Necrologies and various inscription collections.

Because the Library is such an old institution, manuscripts often have a history within the collection as well as their own independent history. Vat.lat.7993 is a perfect example of that, it is part of Galletti's collection of family histories from the parish churches in Rome and covers part of the letter "M". These family history volumes consist of thousands of small strips, each one often only one person, pasted in alphabetical order into the volumes. Often other data, such as genealogical trees is included as well. F.1r, to the right, in this volume has a tree for the Meliosi family, but one that also shows it's post-acquisition history. The page has been split into two pieces, with the cut going through the BAV ownership stamp. So some time after it was added to the collection, it was stamped, and then later that folio was split and reglued as two pieces into the present form.

Ross.595 is a copy of Gratian's Decretals, alongside the usual consanguinity trees, from the tail end of the 12th Century. Many pages include red/blue penwork flourishes in addition to the historiated letters that start each section of the Abreviatum, ff.5r-12r. A segment from f.8r is below.
