Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 31 of 2020

Despite the website being unavilable for Monday, there were eighty-one manuscripts added this week. Continuing from the last two weeks, there are a slew texts and inscriptions copied by Pierluigi Galletti in the 18th C, including more of the Register of Farfa, Roman Necrologies and texts related to specific classes of people in Rome. All of the Galletti manuscripts of the past few weeks are catalogued and briefly described in volume 1 of

Forcella, V. (1879). Catalogo dei manoscritti riguardanti la storia di Roma che si conservano nella Biblioteca Vaticana. Fratelli Bocca.

Because this was published between 1879 and 1885, all four volumes are available online, Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, and Volume 4

One of the prettier manuscripts to go online this week was Ross.526, a copy of Petrarch's _ De viris illustribus_ from the 15th C. This work is a collection of 36 biographies of "Illustrious Men", covering the mythological, like Jason and Hercules, the historical, including Pompey and Trajan, and the Biblical, from Adam to Joseph. He was twice offered the crown of Poet Laureate for this work, by the University of Paris and the Senate of Rome, he accepted Rome's offer, and can be seen crowned with the wreath in the large illuminated I to the right, from f.1r

The bottom border is from F.1r of Vat.lat.4180, Part 1 of Johannes de Segovia's Historia concilii Basiliensis. This volume and the following one, also digitized this week, were once owned by Marcus Barbo, his arms are at the bottom of the same folio. He was the Cardinal of Venice and participated in several of the complex conclaves towards the end of the 15th C.
