Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 42 of 2020

Fourty-seven manuscripts added this week to the online Vatican repositories. Recent trends in content continue, with eleven more Vietnamese texts from the Borg.tonch collection and six more Pierluigi Galletti volumes, though the pace of the latter is slowing. With 286 volumes digitized so far, we may finally be reaching the end of that collection.

This week has several volumes on the inner workings of the Papacy, the sort of gritty details that are often hidden from view. Two are voting records from conclaves, recording all the votes from each round until one candidate finally has the required number and becomes Pope. Vat.lat.8197 covers the conclave that eventually elected Giulio Rospigliosi as Pope Clement IX on June 20, 1667, which took 34 rounds. Vat.lat.8195 covers the subsequent conclave, which concluded with Emilio Bonaventura Altieri as Clement X after 11 rounds.

Vat.lat.8245 gives a different sort of details on the Court of St. Peter, it contains the expese records of John XXII, the second of the Avignon popes, for the year 1331.

Unrelated to the popes is Vat.lat.8097, a 3/4 16th century copy of Agostino Ceasareo's L'arte del navigare, complete with vovelles! One of these is seen on f.3v to the right. An interesting detail is that at the map which forms the center section, the western hemisphere is depicted with roughly the right shapes for North and South America, but these are labeled Peruvana and Indie, Peru being north of India, obviously.

The bottom border is from f.1r of Vat.lat.8112, a 15th century copy of Giovanni Garzoni's De eruditione principum.
