Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 43 of 2020

Only eighteen manuscripts were added to the digital archives this week. The pace may be slower than other weeks due to some work in the Incunabula collection, specifically Stamp.Ross. For the firdst week in months, there appear to be no manuscripts by Pierluigi Galletti, but the work continues digitizing the Borg.tonch collection of Vietnamese manuscripts. Based on a cursory estimate of a total size around 45 volumes, they are nearly 3/4 complete with this fond.

To the right is the first page of text (f.1r) from Vat.lat.587.pt.1, the start of Gregory the Great's Liber Pastoralis. You can see the title in running Lombard capitols at the top, in red and blue, and the author sitting inside the bowl of the illuminated "P". He is wearing a peculiar sort of papal hat, it looks almost like the later "Jews Hat" but without the shaft - it's just a triangle with a little cross on top.

The bottom border is the start of a Sermon by Gregory the Great on Matthew from Vat.lat.587.pt.2, f.338r. Earlier in the manuscript John the Evangelist is being handed a scroll by his eagle, but in this one a lion, usually paired with Mark, is handing Matthew the scroll.
