Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 1 of 2021

Forty-seven manuscripts were added this week to begin 2021. Recent trends are continuing, with Urb.gr manuscripts being added in bulk and the occasional Borg.tonch. Another volume of Pierluigi Galletti was added, reminding us that despite nearly 300 individual items, his works are not yet done being digitized.

To the right is the image at the start of the text of Vat.ar.692, f.2v. This is a 16th Century copy of Life of Barlaam and Josaphat, a fascinating work which started as a life of the Buddha, and through translation and cultural exchange became the story of a pair of Christian saints. Their feasts were even added to the Roman Martyrology on November 27.

The bottom border is from the bi-lingual title page of Urg.gr.108, a collection of philosophical works by Theophrastus and Aristotle, prefaced by an excerpt from Diogenes Laertius' Lives of the Philosophers. This type of Humanist title page is found on most manuscripts, both Latin and Greek, from the Urbani collections.
