Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 2 of 2021

Twenty-two manuscripts added this week to the online Vatican archives. Progress continues this week on the Urb.gr fond, with 131 manuscripts so far digitized out of a total of 165. The bottom border comes from a member of that collection. Urb.gr.112 is a collection of the works of the Athenean orator Isocrates, f.1r provides the border image.

The main image to the right is f.5r from Vat.lat.8488, a copy of Vitruvius' De Architectua. The text is a gorgeous Humanist hand, at the start of the main work in this image the scribe has effortlessly shifted in the text from gold to blue to green to pink and further on Greek words are executed in red ink with similar skill. Sadly the ambitious decorative program, there's space for a 10-line miniature here and a 14-line on on f.1r, among others, was never begun. All that we have is the text of the first three books, breaking off in the middle of book 3.
