Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 15 of 2021

There were twenty-nine manuscripts added to the online archive this week. The trends of the last few weeks continue, beginning with a few Borgiani Armenian manuscripts. Tn this week's case a pair of grammars, one of Armenian, and one an Italian-Turkish Lexicon with the Turkish transcribed in the Armenian alphabet. Work also continues on the late Vat.lat manuscripts, bringing the total to 236 of the 537 manuscripts catalogued by Piazzoni and Vian and published in 1989.

To the right is f.1r of Vat.lat.8966, a collection of German texts from c. 1465-1470. This page, the start of the Schwarzwälder Predigten of Berthold von Regensburg, shows an interesting technique of marking language with script. The Latin text from the Vulgate which begins the sermon is in a Gothic Quadrata, the following German vernacular sermon is in a German cursive. The decorations show a very intense color palette, unlike the paler, more pastely, style favored farther south at the same time.

The bottom line is a line of text from Vat.lat.4951 f.161r. The volume contains sermons from various sources, and was written in/around Rochester, probably in the 12th C.
