Another somewhat slow week from the Vatican with only thirty-three manuscripts digitized. There was an extremely distinct pattern this week, twenty-three of those manuscripts were from Ott.lat, six from Vat.lat and the remaining four from P.I.O, three from the slav subfond. The recent work on the P.I.O collection means that fond, which only had two manuscripts digitized until June of this year, now has 33.

The volume Ott.lat.3025 is what is often termed a Miscellany, it's a collection of unrelated pages bound together to preserve them. In this example, there are papal bulls, imperial letters, fables, part of Virgil's Eclogues, and part of a work on polyphony. The image to the right is f.46r, the start of a 12th C(or possibly 13th C) copy of_Ars organi_. This is not part of Flor Peeter's modern three-volume work on playing the pipe organ, but an early work on polyphonic vocal music.

The border below is from f.1r of Ott.lat.1594, the second volume of a two-part copy of Pliny's Natural History. The books were made for Cardinal Giovanni d’Aragon. He carried the Arms of the house of Aragon, alternating vertical bars of red and gold, and these are seen here in two places. At the bottom the arms are seen plain, and in the initial letter N they are found augmented with the cardinal's hat and tassels. According to some recent research Giovanni had two seals carved with his arms, an imprint of one quite like this design is at Montecassino (MNL OL, DL 18166). One of a more elaborate early Renaissance design is preserved in several examples, including a copy at the Vatican, Fondo Veneto I 5752, 30 September 1479.
