Volume 2 of 6, Vat.lat.10599-10605
Only twenty-three manuscripts were digitized this past week, all on Tuesday. Perhaps due to the low number, the distribution does not follow any recent pattern. The largest number, eight, came from Barb.lat, Vat.lat. following with five and Barb.gr with four. More work on the small P.I.O collection continues with three volumes, including one from the slav sub-section. The week concludes with only two from Ott.lat and one from Vat.ar.
To the right is a page from Barb.lat.576, a 12th C copy of Zachary of Besançon's Unum in Quatuor. This 12th C work presents itself as a commentary on Victor of Capua's Gospel Harmony, but is actually a much more original work. It is an attempt to create a single chronological narrative of the life of Jesus from the fragmentary, inconsistant, and conflicting information within the four Gospels. The page seen here, f.5r, shows the start of the chapter table for the Gospel of Luke, here depicted as a scribe with his iconic Ox hovering overhead.
At the bottom is part of the edge from f.1r of Vat.lat.5880, a 15th C copy of Francesco Filelfo's Life of John the Baptist. Although not a native Florentine, Filelfo taught Classics in Florence from 1429 until 1434, when he was chased out of the city for his anti-Medici teachings.
