Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 44 of 2023

A total of fifty-nine manuscripts were added this past week. Following recent patterns the vast majority of the manuscripts, thirty-six, came from the Pal.gr collection. The other collections added small numbers, six from Ott.lat, four from Vat.lat, three each from Barb.lat, Barb.gr, and Reg.gr.Pio.II, and two from Reg.gr. The week concludes with a single manuscript from each of P.I.O and Vat.ar, the later an unidentified late addition to the fond. As a note, the Pal.gr collection now stands at 243 manuscripts in the Vatican repository and 400 in the Heildelberg one. At the current pace they will complete the fond before the end of the year.

To the right is f.1r from Pal.gr.402, a late 11th C collection of the sermons of Gregory of Nazianzus. Gregory is one of the most influential figures in the early church, and one of the three referred to as the Cappadocian Fathers, along with Basil the Great and Gregory's younger brother Gregory of Nyssa. In addition to the sermons, this volume contains commentary on them, or scholia, which can be seen on the top and bottom, and outer edges of the page.

At the bottom of the page is part of the header block from f.127v of Pal.gr.123. This is a late 9th century manuscript of the complete works of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, beginning with a prolog by Maximus the Confessor.
