A meagre total of twenty-four manuscripts were added this past week. Following the pattern of recent weeks, the bulk of these manuscripts, sixteen in fact, were from the Barb.lat collection. Additional manuscripts came from Capp.Sist.Diari with four, Comb with two, and one each from Vat.gr and Vat.lat
To the right is the highly elaborate start of a Papal Bull of Eugene IV found on f.1r of Barb.lat.2085. This is a 17th C copy of the text which called for a union with the Greek church. The original came out of the council of Florence/Ferrara, as part of the Popes work to unify the worldwide church, and part of the Byzantine Emperors work to gain support against the encroaching Ottomans. As the churches remain apart to this day, and Constantinople fell within the decade, neither goal was achieved. This copy was made for the Barberini family, and has their heraldic bees all across the decorative scheme, which is patterned after metal engravings of the period.
At the bottom is a bit of the border decorations from p.21 of Comb.A.13, an Ethiopic manuscript of what is probably a Psalter. The Comboniani collection consists of 281 volumes, mostly in Ethiopic, related to Daniele Comboni and his Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. Until last week only a single volume had been properly digitized, but with the recent work the count has increased to 10.
