Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 10 of 2021

A total of forty manuscripts were added this week to the online archives. Of note are six of a nine-volume collections of drawings by Pier Leone Ghezzi, done around 1702 and once oned by Marquis Benedetto Guglielmi di Vulci, Vat.lat.14939-14947. There is also a medical Miscellany, including a Commentary on the Viaticum and an annonmous text on urine.

To the right is a calendar page for April from a Breviary made for the Use of Cologne, Vat.lat.14874, f.2v. It is interesting for the way the calendar is annotated, there are the Dominical letters and Golden Numbers, elements used for calculating the date of Easter, as usual on the far left. Then there are the Roman dates, that is the numbers counting down to the Nones, Ides and Kalends of the month, but in early Arabic numerals where the 7, 5 and 4 have not yet taken the modern form. What is most unusual is the column to the far right, with the alphabet repeating, starting with "A" on January 1. Not only is this an unual form, but after "Z" are several of the most common Tironian notes, including &, est, tur, con and occasionally us. This is a common pattern on scribal tests, perhaps on a flyleaf, but not something often seen in a formal part of a manuscript

The bottom border is a line of music from Vat.lat.14852, the top line of f.7r. The text read "-tum uidi dominu[m] meum alle-" with the conclusion "luia" on the following line.
