Vatican Manuscripts Added Week 48 of 2022

The last month of the year began quietly, with only thirty-two manuscripts added to the repository this week. As last week, the majority, twenty-one, were from Vat.lat. The remainder were scattered across various fonds, with five in Ott.lat, two each in Borg.ar and Vat.ar and single additions from Capp.sist and Barb.org. Of note is Vat.lat.7818, a 12th C Pontifical with Beneventan neumes over a protogothic hand, followed by the letters of Bruno of Segni in a very rough Beneventan hand.

In the Mass, the Eucharist is the peak of the service, the point of the transubstantiation where the bread and wine become the body and blood of Jesus. The first prayer of this section of the Canon of the Mass is "Te Igitur", and so often that text is more decorated than other pages in a service book. The Missal Ott.lat.156, dated to 1426 on both f.1r and in a colophon on the last page, is no exception, only page with a miniature and one of only two pages with a decorated initial is f.50v, to the right, where the decorated "T" begins that prayer

The bottom border is from the start of the Bass part of a 4-part mass arrangement found on f.2r in Capp.Sist.196. This is the start of an elaborate Kyrie eleison
