Under the smooth shiny hood of the Vatican Library's digital manuscripts portal, which currently has 10,420 items online to read, it's now possible for the scholar to distinguish two categories of URLs to share with friends. The first comprises links to full-color scans of manuscripts like the 94 items below, the latest digitization release, on January 26, 2017.

The second category, very likely kept on a different server, comprises digital versions of old microfilms, mostly black and white but a few in color, which are essentially the same as those made available in recent years on CD-ROM by the Vatican photographic workshop at 50 euros and upwards apiece. The URLS, marked "low quality", are permanent links, which I am guessing will remain valid when these films are ultimately replaced by proper scans.

Keeping track of all this cannot be done without help from software. I use an extension, Distill, available for the Chrome and Firefox browsers.

One of its benefits is that it can be programmed to only monitor the parts of the index pages that matter. For each collection, I create a monitor that ignores the page decoration and thumbnail images and only extracts the the plain shelfmarks from the page as served:

I am experimenting with a second monitor that drills down through the DOM tree to the words "low quality" to detect when that flag disappears (after a high-quality scan replaces a microfilm):

Greek Night Sky

Some of the most important real releases of new manuscripts by the Vatican Library in the past week are the many Vatican Greek items newly scanned and digitized.

One of these prizes is Vat.gr.1291, a 9th-century manuscript of the "handy tables" by the Late Antique Greek astronomer Ptolemy for astronomical observation. The Rome Reborn catalog remarks: Ptolemy's Handy Tables (4th century) became the basis of later astronomical tables in Greek, Arabic, and Latin. The Handy Tables allow the calculation of solar, lunar, and planetary positions and eclipses of the sun and moon far more rapidly than the tables included in the Almagest. This early and elegant uncial manuscript is well-known for its illumination drawn elegantly in white against the dark blue of the night sky, showing the northern part of the zodiac.

Another highlight is Vat.gr.1288, containing the Vatican Dio Cassius, books 78-79, the sole extant source of those two books of this ancient work of history (see Roger Pearse for more).

Science in the Year 1000

Ending an extraordinary week for DigiVatLib, where nearly 4,000 microfilms were placed online as scans, I bring you a list of the new Ottoboniani Latin codices.

One could argue that one of main manuscripts in terms of history here here is one that grew from an elaborate and devilishly clever early medieval political plot, the Pseudo-Isidorian Decretals.

The spectacular Pontificale of King Mathias Corvin of Hungary is undoubtedly the greatest item of art in this bunch of 407 codices, but there is also one fine jewel in the history of science. Ott.lat.477, Isidore's Etymologiae in a 13th-century manuscript, is special because of an insertion: this little-known text comprises a history of medicine and a summary of anatomy.

Its origin is Hebrew, from the Book of Asaph (4th-6th century CE) and what one might describe as a history-of-science course for Jewish medical students, and its Latin elaboration, a progressive version with many alterations, reviews the place of Hippocrates, Galen and others in the long course of studies of the human body.

This 11th-century text is found in eight medieval manuscripts, attached to Etymologiae Book 4 (Medicine), and demonstrates that medieval science after the year 1000 was not fixed or trapped in a corset of ancient knowledge, but kept altering and being revised.

There has also been progress this week in understanding why the 4,000 are not yet scans in color. There has been a public assurance from @DigitaVaticana this week on Twitter, light-hearted but seriously, that the proper scans will be done.

The black and white versions are just a temporary solution to the pressure from scholars to at least see "something“ of the Vatican treasures. Those scans are available for purchase at an average price of 70 euros per CD-ROM, so one could argue that putting all 3,950 sets online for free is a gift worth 276,500 euros (296,000 dollars). 

As far as I can understand, digitizing microfilm can be automated, and there are good arguments for taking this "American" approach, instead of being ultra-perfect and slow.  With 80,000 items to digitize and fewer than 7,000 completed, the task ahead remains enormous and will be a matter of many years.

This is one of the four main codices, usually with the sigle VO, but it dates from the 18th century and there is general consent that it is copied from the manuscript ML of Florence, which survives. Here's a printing in Italian on Archive.org. Giovanni Mazzaferro has detailed 45 editions worldwide. In Japan, the first translation appeared in 1924. Tree men

Among the nearly 4,000 microfilms of manuscripts posted online this week by the Vatican Library, the block from the Barberini collection may be the largest. It contains the famous Barberini Bible, a so-called Italian giant bible (bibbia atlantica) with decorated initials, but no illustrations. The term giant is perhaps misleading. One might more comprehensibly call it oversized. Here is the L (for Liber) at the start of the Gospel of Matthew.

Michael Gorman has suggested this may be a product of the scribes of Abbey of Monte Amiata, home of the Codex Amiatinus from England. For a contrary account of the giant bibles, see Lila Yawn (2010, esp. note 77), arguing they were produced as commercial ventures. Yet another theory argues a papal scriptorium in Rome had the brand rights to giant bibles.

There are also two law manuscripts in the batch with those curious drawings where an arbor juris is forced to appear like a tree and is held up by a man, whose rather fashionable beard indicates he is not God, pope or a lawgiver, but perhaps the man in the street. The photographs of the manuscripts are of a quality no longer acceptable today, but often readable, and the library explains that it is kindly offering them as stopgap until the labour- and money-intensive digital scanning of these same codices is completed. It laudably suggests that even imperfect images may be of some use to scholars who may not be able to wait until well-illuminated color images become available.

Gallica has placed BNF manuscripts online in black and white for similar reasons: it is relatively cheap to feed a microfilm through an automatic scanning machine which separates out the frames.
